Boys Varsity Soccer Headed to Playoffs

Congratulations to Boys Varsity Soccer for earning a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Playoffs. The Wildcats finished the season in second place in the Liberty League with a 9-4 overall record and 4-2 in league play. They go up against Environmental Charter in the first round of the CIF Tournament Thursday, February 15 at 3:00PM at the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex.
Coach Will Correas noted that is the first time in the three years he has been head coach that the team has made it to the playoffs. “It took a bit of team building and growth to get to where we are now,” he said. “I’m extremely proud of the whole team and our achievements.”

Season highlights include a couple of exciting comebacks. Down 0-2 against Whittier Christian at the half, the team worked their way back for a 4-3 win. Against de Toledo after trailing 0-2 at the start of the second half, the team refused to give up. After making some minor adjustments, they pulled off the win and secured their playoff spot.
According to Coach Correas, the team is well balanced in terms of skill and soccer IQ level. A young team, comprised of mostly underclassmen, Ben Faith is the lone senior. Coach Correas remarked that Faith has shown a lot of dedication and has been very impactful off the bench. The Juniors, he said, are the most experienced players on the team, and singled out Evan Avicasis, Aitan Stuppel, Bryan Bekhrad, Gavin Lieberman, and Aaron Cohen as the cohesive core of the team .

Other standout players include Joseph Sarvian ’20, who didn’t play his freshman year, but joined the team this year and has been a great leader as a goalkeeper. Twins, Anakin Szew ’20  and Aidan Szew ’20, have exuded a high soccer IQ and level of skill. And lastly, freshmen Sawyer Shalit and Brayden Bekhrad both demonstrated a tremendous amount of effort and have a lot of heart.
