  • Ms. Lise Applebaum, Chairman

    Lise Applebaum has been a parent at Milken Community School since 2008, with a son having graduated in 2012 and with two children currently enrolled in the school. During that time, she has been involved in numerous activities including serving as treasurer of the MPA, volunteering at the Milken Mart, serving on the Audit, Israel Judaica, and Head of School Liaison Committees, in addition to helping with the school’s annual giving campaign. Most recently, she was appointed to the school’s Finance Committee. Ms. Applebaum served as the Sinai Akiba Academy Board Chair from 2005-2008 during which time she chaired the $10 million renovation of the middle school. Prior to that time, she chaired the Sinai Akiba Academy Budget Committee and also served on Sinai Temple’s Executive Board of Directors. In addition to serving on the executive board of Vista Del Mar, a non-profit social service agency which offers a wide range of social and psychological services to children and their families in Southern California, she currently serves as treasurer and finance chair of that organization, in addition to serving on numerous board committees. She is also a member of the board of directors of Beit T’Shuvah, a residential and outpatient treatment center, where she serves as finance chair. Ms. Applebaum has been actively involved in a development capacity in all of these organizations. Ms. Applebaum worked at Deloitte and Touche for 10 years and was a senior manager in the audit department, where she specialized in transactional work. She is a Certified Public Accountant and graduated with an MBA and Bachelor of Science from USC.
  • Mr. Karl S. Thurmond, Vice Chair

    Karl is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School. He specializes in business litigation and trial work.

    Karl has received a Special Commendation Award from El Pollo Loco, Inc. for his contributions to the success of El Pollo Loco, and has served on the Judicial Appointments Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He has been named a "Southern California Super Lawyer" ten times, selected one of the Top 100 Black Lawyers in the State of California by the National Black Lawyers Association for the past two years, and named one of the Top 100 Litigation Lawyers in the State of California by the American Society of Legal Advocates the past two years.

    Karl currently serves as co-chair of Milken’s Annual Fund, on the Head of School’s Liaison Committee for Milken and the Principal’s Liaison Committee at Milken. He previously served on the Board of Directors of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, served as President of the Board of Regents of Temple Emanuel Academy Day School and was appointed by California State Senate to the Structural Pest Control Board of the State of California.
  • Mr. Ken Gross, Secretary

    Ken Gross is the founder and president of California Survey Research Services Incorporated, a marketing research company that provides telephone, web, and mail survey research services to academic, corporate, and government clients. Prior to founding the firm in 1981, Ken served as a statistician with the U.S. Census Bureau managing data collection on federal government research projects. Ken has recently served as president of Stephen S. Wise Temple and has actively served on the Stephen S. Wise Temple Board for over ten years. He has also served as president of the Southern California Chapter of the American Marketing Association and as an officer of the Pacific Chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research.

    Ken has led discussion classes at Milken Community High School in Business Ethics for the last 12 years as a volunteer. He previously taught classes as a volunteer in statistics and probability at both Milken and Stephen S. Wise Elementary School with both advanced and at-level students.

    Ken has played an active role on the Milken Community High School Board on a continuous basis beginning in 1993. His commitment to Jewish education and his long-standing desire to develop Milken as one of the pre-eminent high schools in the U.S., has led him to serve Milken in the areas of development, finance, governance, community relations, Head recruitment, admissions, technology, long-range planning, educational policy, and Board development.

  • Rabbi Ed Feinstein

    Rabbi Ed Feinstein is senior rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California. He is an instructor at the Ziegler Rabbinical School of the American Jewish University and the Wexner Heritage Program. Formerly, Rabbi Feinstein served as founding director of the Solomon Schechter Academy of Dallas, TX, executive director of Camp Ramah in California, and was one of the founding leaders of the Synagogue 2000 initiative. His books, Tough Questions Jews Ask – A Young Adult’s Guide to Building a Jewish Life, and Jews and Judaism in the 21st Century, were National Jewish Book Award finalists. His latest book, Capturing the Moon, retells the best of classic and modern Jewish folktales. Ed shares life with his wife, Nina, and three college-age kids. Every Friday afternoon, he bakes brownies from a recipe revealed to his ancestors at Mount Sinai.
  • Ms. Sherri Fogelman

    For the past 21 years, Sherri and her husband of almost 25 years, John, have been raising their 3 children ages 21, 17, and 15.

    Sherri’s journey provided a unique perspective in the world of education by guiding one child with both medical and learning challenges and another with congenital partial blindness and dyslexia. The boys benefited greatly from Sherri’s formal educational background. A committed, Los Angeleno, Sherri graduated from both the undergraduate program in art history and the master’s program in education at UCLA.

    While earning both of these degrees, Sherri worked at various Los Angeles schools, including Brentwood Science Magnet, UCLA Lab School, Wildwood, and Kenter Canyon Elementary School. She also taught at Temple Israel of Hollywood, as well as, Hillel Hebrew Academy both as a second grade teacher.

    Currently, Sherri is pursuing a College Counseling certificate at UCLA with the intention of integrating this coursework with her formal education, work experience, and family challenges.
  • Ms. Dana Guerin

    Dana Guerin has been a devoted member of the Stephen S. Wise community since 1977. After college, she worked in the entertainment business in such diverse companies as Fox Television, The Gersh Agency, and at Overseas Filmgroup/First Look Pictures in international sales. She worked for Warner Brothers in the late 90’s at the beginning of internet video streaming developing the first content produced solely for the web. 

    For three years, Dana also managed the soup kitchen at Frontline Foundation, which just hit one million meals served to the downtown homeless population in 2012. After this, she took time off to raise her three beautiful daughters. When one of her children was diagnosed with Autism in 2004, Dana became actively involved in her therapies and mainstreaming education. She later became a passionate advocate for autism research, education, and awareness. 

    Dana is currently working with the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Therapies (UCLA CART) to revamp and update their website for improved public outreach and creating focus groups to make their message more accessible to parents and educators alike. She is also actively involved with the PEERS group working with adolescents with autism, teaching much-needed peer-to-peer coping and communication skills. 

    Dana is also certified through Mini Yogis to teach yoga to children. Currently, all three of her daughters attend Stephen S. Wise Temple. During this time, Dana has been a member of the Advisory Board, SOVA committee, Yom Ha’Moreh, and the Book Fair Committee. She also has worked as an active volunteer for both the Early Childhood Center and elementary school libraries since 2007. She is devoted to all aspects of children’s literacy.

  • Mr. Leon Janks

    Leon Janks has over thirty years of experience in the areas of audit and accounting, tax planning and general business consulting. He advises his clients on matters related to strategic planning, profitability, mergers and acquisitions, and buying and selling businesses. Leon serves clients in a wide variety of industries, including manufacturing distribution and retail.

    Leon is a member of the California Society of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. On a global scale, Leon represents Green Hasson Janks in HLB International, a global network of accounting firms in 140 countries. He is a member of the board of directors and chairs both the audit and finance committees for PriceSmart, a publicly held company in San Diego.

    Leon is on the board of directors of the Jewish Federation and is the chairman of the audit committee. He is on the Board of Trustees for Milken Community High School.

    Leon has a Masters degree in Accounting and a Bachelors degree in Commerce. Leon's hobbies include surfing, scuba diving and skiing.
  • Mr. Todd Katz

    The primary focus of Mr. Katz’s business career has been all facets of commercial real estate. Beginning his career in leasing, then moving into sales, Mr. Katz has been a general partner involved in acquisitions, asset and property management, construction management, marketing and leasing, financing and dispositions.

    In 1996 Mr. Katz co-founded Century Park Partners, LLC, a real estate investment firm that acquires single tenant institutional grade commercial assets with long-term leases throughout the United States. Century Park Partners invests in conservative, high-quality real estate involving industrial property and corporate and regional headquarters office buildings. Mr. Katz specializes in underwriting and evaluation, acquisition and financing, strategic planning, construction management, and the asset management of these properties.

    Mr. Katz has been intensely committed to volunteer work within the Los Angeles community and beyond since his teenage years. He has been active in the Westside Family YMCA since 1970 and joined its Board of Managers in 1990. He acted as its Board Chair for two years and has, over the years, served in various leadership capacities on almost every committee. He is currently chairing the Westside Family Y’s $20 Million Capital Campaign, having been one of the true visionaries on a project that will result in a brand new YMCA opening on the University High School Campus in 2017. He has also been a volunteer director for the past 30 years of the Collins-Katz YMCA’s one-week Summer Residence Camp in Big Bear. Mr. Katz also serves on the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles’ Board of Directors and is currently Chair of their Camping Services Committee that oversees three campsites on behalf of all 26 branches in the association.

    Mr. Katz also devotes time, energy and resources to UCLA, where he is the Vice-Chair of the UCLA Health System Board of Advisors, the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Board, and runs, together with his wife Dana, the Operation Mend Buddy Family Program. Todd is also a proud graduate of UCLA!

    Todd is intensely committed to his children, Sean and Hailey, and to his stepchildren, Gracen and Sara. He says his most notable accomplishment is managing to stay fully committed to doing good work in the community while being fully employed and raising children.
  • Ms. Janine Lowy

    In addition to serving on the Head of School Search Committee, Janine serves on the MCHS Board of Trustees. She has held multiple communal leadership roles, including serving on the boards of Camp Ramah in California, the American Friends of Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Center for Jewish Education at the American Jewish University, and the Education Cabinet of Pressman Academy of Temple Beth Am. Janine and her husband, Peter, are strong supporters of Jewish day schools of all religious affiliations, their synagogues, Camp Ramah, and Jewish day school educational programs nationwide.

    Jewish educational programs made possible by their support include: The Advanced Jewish Studies Center and the Tiferet Israel Fellows program at Milken Community High School; programs at the Etta Israel Center benefiting special needs children; the Jewish Federation’s Tel Aviv/L.A. Partnership’s Education Twinning Program, Camp Ramah in California’s Camper Incentive Program, PEJE’s Financial Management Conferences for Day Schools and its Leadership and Fundraising Academy; The BJE’s Hebrew Immersion training program, the Generations program, and the Master of Arts in Teaching for Working Professionals program at the American Jewish University. They also support scholars and research programs at the Washington Institute, RAND and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

    Janine Winkler Lowy holds a BA, LLB, from the University of New South Wales and practiced law in Australia before moving to the United States. She is currently completing her studies toward a Master in Liberal Studies at USC. Janine and Peter have four children, Simonette, Jacqueline, Benjamin, and Caroline. Simonette, Jacqueline and Benjamin are MCHS graduates. Caroline currently attends the tenth grade.
  • Mr. Lowell Milken

In particular, Lowell’s reputation as a visionary leader of education reform has been honed by more than three decades of education research, policy and practices; complemented by firsthand visits to thousands of classrooms across the U.S. and abroad.

    Lowell created the Milken Educator Awards—now celebrating its 30th anniversary—to honor and inspire excellence in the teaching profession while encouraging talented young people to choose teaching as a profession. And with a goal to develop greater numbers of effective educators, Lowell launched the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) in 205.     As an active and ardent supporter of the Jewish community in the U.S. and Israel, Lowell has been instrumental in the mission and development of Milken Community Schools since their inception in 1990. The Milken Archive of Jewish Music, founded in 1990, combines Lowell’s passion for Judaism, education and music in a historic body of work that includes more than 600 recordings, 200 composers and 800 hours of oral histories.

    The following initiatives are under the auspices of the Lowell Milken Family Foundation, which is dedicated to strengthening communities through innovation and education.
    • The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes (LMC) discovers, develops and communicates the stories of Unsung Heroes who have made a profound and positive difference on the course of history. Through student-driven, project-based learning, students and entire communities learn that each of us has the responsibility and the power to take actions that “repair the world” by improving the lives of others. Since 2007, LMC has reached more than 1,200,000 students and 9,000 schools in all 50 states and several countries. The new Hall of Unsung Heroes opened in 2016 at LMC’s Fort Scott, Kansas, headquarters as a state-of-the-art museum and hub of research and discovery.
    • By setting new standards in business law education, the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law prepares students for outstanding careers and leadership in business, the non-profit sector and philanthropy. The Institute simultaneously serves as a dynamic hub of research and strategy for practitioners, scholars and experts across a variety of disciplines. The Lowell Milken Institute-Sandler Prize for New Entrepreneurs supports the launch of promising new business ventures with $100,000 in competitive funding to student teams that include at least one UCLA Law student.
    • The Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography (HMCT) at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena honors the legacy of Leah Hoffmitz Milken, a letterform expert known for unique logotypes and typefaces and a legendary professor for two decades. HMCT is dedicated to setting the global standard of excellence in typography and design education at a time of rapidly changing visual communication methods and devices.
    Recognition for Lowell’s achievements in education include the National Association of State Boards of Education, Horace Mann League, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Jewish Theological Seminary, Kappa Delta Pi international honor society and UCLA School of Law. Hebrew Union College and Chapman University have each presented Lowell with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

    Named by Worth magazine as one of America’s most generous philanthropists, Lowell is also an international businessman who chairs Knowledge Universe Education as well as London-based Heron International, a worldwide leader in property development. His experience in business at the global level informs his strategic vision for the high-caliber educational opportunities vital to equip future generations to compete on the world stage and to secure America’s heritage as a democracy.

    Lowell Milken is a product of California’s public school system, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from the University of California, Berkeley, where he received the School of Business Administration’s Most Outstanding Student Award. He earned a law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, with academic honors of Order of the Coif and the distinction of UCLA Law Review.
  • Dr. Farid Pakravan

    Farid Pakravan has spent more than 20 years as a Senior Partner of West Coast Dental Services, Inc. Dr. Pakravan attended UCLA for his undergraduate studies and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, CA. He maintains active memberships with the California Dental Association, American Dental Association, California Association of Dental Plans and the American Academy of Dental Group Practice. He is also an active member the Young Presidents’ Organization and serves as a Board Member for the Israel Air Force Center Foundation.

    Dr. Pakravan is married with four children and resides in Brentwood, CA.
  • Ms. Nurit Robin

    Nurit Robin, an attorney, is actively involved in Jewish education in Los Angeles, serving on the BJE (Builders of Jewish Education) Executive Committee and the Jewish Federation’s Ensuring the Jewish Future Committee. Nurit served as a member of the Valley Beth Shalom Day School Board of Trustees and as the Chair of the VBS Day School Endowment. She currently serves on the Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue Board of Directors. Ms. Robin is a graduate of Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Journalism. She received her Juris Doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law, where she was a member of Law Review. She is also a graduate of the Wexner Heritage Foundation Program and is actively involved in several non-profit organizations.

    Nurit and her husband Richard are devoted to strengthening Jewish education in Los Angeles. The Robins have three daughters, all currently students at Milken.
  • Mr. Ken Ruby

    Kenneth A. Ruby, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School with a Real Estate major.. He was responsible for building over 3500 apartment units while with R & B Development Company, a company he helped found. After leaving R & B Development Co. in 1968, he founded Ken Ruby Construction Co., a real estate development company, contractor and management company that has been very active in Southern California real estate since that time.

    He was a member of the Los Angeles County Real Estate Management Commission from 1977 to 2002. Active in his synagogue for many years, he is a past president of Stephen S. Wise Temple, and for many years, chairman of its building committee. In addition, he is a member of the Hebrew Union College Board of Governors, emeritus, and is a Board member and Chairman of the Construction Committee of the Skirball Cultural Center, in West Los Angeles. He is on the Board of Visitors of the UCLA Medical Center and on the Board of the Jonsson Cancer Center also of UCLA and a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. He was recently elected to the National Board of the American Jewish Committee.

    He is currently active developing and building industrial projects. His companies currently own or manage over 1, 755,000 square feet of office, commercial and industrial buildings in Southern California. In the past, an additional 1,080,000 square feet have been built, managed and sold or exchanged for other properties by his companies or partnerships.
  • Mr. Richard Sandler

    Richard Sandler is the executive vice president and a trustee of the Milken Family Foundation. He has been involved with the Milken Family Foundation since its formation in 1982 and has contributed time and support to the Foundation’s many initiatives in education and medical research.

    Richard is currently Chair of The Jewish Federation and serves on a number of non-profit boards including the American Jewish University, Valley Beth Shalom, Milken Community High School, and the University of California at Berkeley Foundation. Sandler is also a member of the board of directors of the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Milken Institute.

    He is a partner in the law firm of Maron & Sandler, specializing in business restructurings and acquisitions, securities transactions, and real estate. He has been an investor for over 25 years, including acting as the managing partner of various partnerships investing in commercial and industrial real estate projects, and other business transactions. He serves on the boards of directors of a number of companies, and is a member of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association. Sandler graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Berkeley, and received his law degree from UCLA Law School.
  • Mr. Anton Schiff

    Mr. Schiff has been employed by Agron, inc. since 1993 and currently serves as the company’s Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer. Los Angeles based Agron is a licensee of adidas America for the hat, bag, sock, underwear and small accessory categories. Mr. Schiff is one of Agron’s original executives and has helped guide the Company from six employees and revenues of $5million to its current level of 75 employees and annual revenues in excess of $320 million. In 1994 Mr. Schiff helped transition the Company from its original ownership to the Company’s employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Today Agron is 100% employee owned through the ESOP. Mr. Schiff was actively involved with a small group of ESOP companies who worked with Congress to permit for ESOP’s to be held under an S Corporation structure. Additionally, Mr. Schiff has been actively involved in trade issues relating to China and the Caribbean region.

    Prior to joining Agron, Mr. Schiff was the Chief Financial Officer of Paul Singer Floor Coverings where he was involved in the reorganization and subsequent sale of the Company to MSA Industries (now Du Pont Flooring). Prior to Paul Singer Mr. Schiff served as Controller of Tishman Construction Corporation of California. Mr. Schiff earned his C.P.A. license while practicing at Laventhol and Horwath.

    Mr. Schiff was the co-founder of the Jewish Venture Philanthropy Fund of Los Angeles and also helped launch the major gift campaign at Brawerman Elementary School where he served on the school committee.

    Mr. Schiff has a Bachelor of Commerce degree with statistics and accounting majors as well as a post graduate Honors Degree in finance from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Ms. Nancy Schulman

    Nancy Schulman has been married to Jay Schulman for almost 18 years. They have two sons; Michael is a junior and Daniel is a freshman at Milken. Both Michael and Daniel went to Valley Beth Shalom Day School before attending Milken Middle School. Nancy and Jay were married at VBS and have lived in Encino for almost 18 years.

    Nancy grew up in the San Fernando Valley and received a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Human Resource Management, from Loyola Marymount University in 1984. She worked in Human Resources for three years before deciding to go to Law School. She graduated from Loyola Law School, earning her J.D. in 1990. She litigated in the area of Insurance Defense for 15 years.

    Nancy is currently serving a second term on the Board of the Builders of Jewish Education, serving on the Agency Visibility Committee. She has also served on the Nominating Committee and the Board Development Committee, as well as Chaired the Annual Gala.

    Nancy is a member of the University Women at the American Jewish University, The Federation, Women’s Division, AIPAC, and is an active member of Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue. She has had various positions at the VBS Day School.

    Nancy is currently a Docent for Milken. She has served on the Middle School Principal’s Advisory Committee and she currently serves on the Head of Schools Advisory Committee.
  • Rabbi David Wolpe

    Named the most influential Rabbi in America by Newsweek Magazine and one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world by the Jerusalem Post, David Wolpe is the Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, California. He previously taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, Hunter College, and UCLA. Rabbi Wolpe, a weekly columnist for, has been published and profiled in the New York Times, the LA Times, the Washington Post’s On Faith website, The Huffington Post, and the New York Jewish Week. He has been on television numerous times, including the Today Show, Face the Nation, ABC this Morning, and CBS This Morning. In addition Rabbi Wolpe has been featured in series on PBS, A&E, the History channel, and the Discovery channel.   • Rabbi David Woznica

    Rabbi Woznica began his rabbinate as the founding director of the 92nd Street Y Bronfman Center for Jewish Life in New York. He is credited for creating and overseeing what is widely regarded as one of the most lively and distinguished hubs of Jewish life in the United States. Since 2004, he has proudly served Stephen Wise Temple in Los Angeles. In addition to serving as a congregational rabbi, he created and oversees the temple’s highly regarded and innovative series of lectures, dialogues and classes, it’s Center for Jewish Life.

    Through the Forum on Contemporary Values Series he has been in dialogue over 60 times. His guests include Elie Wiesel (7 times), Alan Dershowitz (5 times), Senator Joseph Lieberman, David Brooks, Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, Police Chief Bratton, Minister Natan Sharansky, David Brooks and Wendy Wasserstein. Some of the evenings were nationally televised. He has been on the faculty of the Wexner Heritage Foundation, a lecturer for the YPO (Young Presidents Organization) and has given speeches throughout the United States as well as in Canada and South America.

    Rabbi Woznica is married to Beverly Woznica, Managing Director of Philanthropic Resources of the Jewish Federations of North America. Their two children, Joshua and Daniel, are proud graduates of Milken Community Schools.
  • Dr. John Yadegar

    Dr. John Yadegar is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and a member of the Board of Governors at Palmdale Regional Medical Center (PRMC), Los Angeles, part of the UHS Corporation (Fortune 500 company). He has been the Medical Director of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Program at (PRMC) for the past 11 years and is the Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical Center.

    His Weight Loss Surgery and Metabolic Program has been awarded 5 Stars by Health Grades three consecutive years and is ranked as the top 10% in the USA. The program is the first one in California and the sixth in the country to be affiliated with the NFL (HOPE) program to bring attention to childhood obesity.

    Dr. Yadegar was born in Iran and emigrated to England in 1979 at age 12. He attended the Hasmonean School in London and completed his Medical School at University College London-England. He trained in Surgery at Addenbrooke's Hospital-Cambridge University and subsequently transferred to UCLA in 1999. He completed his Surgical Residency at UCLA and New York Medical College and Yale affiliated Hospitals and completed his Minimally Invasive Fellowship at UCLA in 2004.

    His beloved wife Stephanie and his children Daniel and Abigail are his heart and soul. They are actively engaged in our School and Community and fully committed to Jewish education. Most of his extended family resides in Los Angeles, New York, London and Israel. The family is heavily invested in education and Academia and various charities. Dr. Yadegar hobbies include, traveling, painting, arts and music.
