Rising Seniors Teach Voices of the Holocaust

Inspired by a desire to teach music composition to high school students and tie it in with the Holocaust, rising seniors Alexis Farahi, Megan Kohanarieh, and Ethan Permaul, recently taught a program at Milken for young composers and musicians called Voices of the Holocaust. The class began with a trip to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) where students met Holocaust survivor Eva, who shared her personal story. Each student created a piece of music inspired by motifs and themes of the Holocaust and stories from Holocaust survivors. Using a program called MuseScore2 to help digitalize the composition process allowed students who didn't play instruments to hear their pieces through MIDI software so that they could compose without much prior musical knowledge. The class culminated with students presenting their original compositions to parents and faculty.
