CyberPatriot Team Clinches First Place in Silver Tier Division
Congratulations to the Platinum Wildcats CyberPatriot Team for finishing first in the Silver Tier Division of the California state round in the Air Force Association-sponsored CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The semifinal was held on February 11. The contest is designed to teach students about cyber security by having teams work to strengthen and defend a simulated network from cyber attacks. They are presented with virtual images that represent operating systems and have six hours to identifythe cyber security vulnerabilities and fix them. Using coding, an advanced knowledge of windows environments, and simple trial and error, the teams reinforce the network. Points are scored each time they repair a flaw and teams are penalized if they make the system less secure.
Milken’s three CyberPatriot teams—Platinum Wildcats, Gold Wildcats, and Silver Wildcats—meet two Sundays per month for practice. To help prepare for competition, guest speakers were brought in to lecture on cybersecurity topics. The majority of students involved have taken Coach Javy Martinez’s computer science class, but he says they are always working to recruit new members, encouraging those who have not had classes to sign up for computer science classes.
Coach Martinez remarked enthusiastically of his team, “This is a great group of kids and I enjoy working with them. Next year, we plan on really going after the platinum division championship and competing for a spot at nationals. We have the talent and the motivation. I'm excited!”
