Boys Varsity Basketball Advances to Milken Classic Championship Game

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Basketball team for taking second place in the annual Milken Basketball Classic. The Wildcats performed well in the season-opening annual tournament held November 28-30.

After breezing through the early rounds, and showing their opponents no mercy, the Wildcats faced a formidable opponent in the Championship Game against Mary Star of the Sea. Mary Star came out of the gate quickly, winning the opening tip off and draining several three pointers to take a fast lead.

Milken struggled at first to find their rhythm, but with the vocal crowd cheering them on, the Wildcats proceeded to get on track. They managed to tie the game in the second quarter. A buzzer-beating three-point shot by Mary Star put the Wildcats down by five points at the half.

The game was fast paced and physical from the start, with players scrambling to gain control of the ball. Mary Star shot with pinpoint accuracy, forcing the Wildcats to try to keep pace with the baskets. In the end, the Wildcats could not withstand the late game surge of Mary Star, who would not relinquish control and ease up on the three-pointers. Despite the loss, there were some notable highlights from the game and tournament. Amitai Afenjar ’18 and Aaron Harouni ’18 were both recognized for their exceptional play and were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Both players sprained their ankles during the contest, but they didn’t let that get them down and toughed it out to finish playing the game. Milken’s leading scorers in the Championship Game included Afenjar with 30 points, Harouni added 17 points, and Doron Matian ’18 contributed 11 points.

“I had a great time playing in the Milken Classic because it was a great warm up for our basketball season. Being able to face so many different teams was a great chance to feel out our team before the league starts up,” noted Afenjar.

"The guys had a great tournament. Mary Star was a tough opponent, and we have some things we need to work on— like recognizing the open man.  But I think it was good preparation for our regular season,” acknowledged Coach Mike Whiting.

The Wildcats start their regular season, which was postponed due to the Skirball fire, after the Winter Break.
