Upper School Architecture & Design Teacher

Milken Community Schools, the largest 7-12 community Jewish day school in the United States, seeks to hire an enthusiastic educator to serve as an Upper School Architecture & Design Teacher.

Position Overview
The Upper School Architect and Design Teacher is a full-time teacher and member of the Architecture and Design Institute (A+DI), reporting to the director of the institute. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment where value is placed on the skills and passions of the disciplinarian within a larger context of school mission and integrative thinking. Primary responsibilities include: teaching architecture and design classes, which are defined below, serving as a student advisor, and collaborating on school-wide programming as necessary and appropriate.

  • Monitor progress of each student for mastery of course content, providing intervention or differentiation when necessary and appropriate, and consistent high quality feedback
  • Ensure relevancy by connecting course content to other academic domains and authentically exploring the relationship between course content, the Milken Community Schools mission, and the Portrait of the Graduate
  • Utilize collaborative and individual learning opportunities that support student growth
  • Design lessons that are well-sequenced in terms of content and developmental appropriateness, and based on current institutional curriculum
  • Develop learning experiences where inquiry, curiosity, and exploration are valued
  • Create a learning environment where students feel safe and welcome
  • Create an environment that encourages explorations and experiential learning
  • Demonstrate situational adaptability that balances the needs of social teens, the needs of the lesson, and teachable moments
  • Engage with students outside the classroom through office hours, extracurricular activities, clubs, and school-wide programming
  • Evidence of artistic expression and involvement in own artistic development.
  • Ability to network and connect with resources in the local region for enrichment opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Design Arts: The course develops the foundation for completing two- and three dimensional design projects. The students develop knowledge of design fundamentals, perspective and observational composition, printmaking; proportion, scale and plan drawing; material studies, construction of three-dimensional projects, and the study of historic and contemporary product design. It is the pre-requisite for Architectural Design and/or Fashion Design.
  • Architectural Design: This course provides the foundation for architecture, design and the built environment. The students develop knowledge of perspective and observational composition, hand drafting, floor plans and elevations drawings; model making, presentations and critiques; and the study of historic and contemporary methodologies with emphasis on ecosystems and responsible citizenry.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Architecture, Design or a related field; master’s degree preferred
  • Previous teaching experience required; at the high-school level preferred
  • Knowledge of drawing, design, model construction, Adobe Suites, and Sketch-up.
