Michelle Shane Kallen '03 Appointed Deputy Solicitor General
Michelle (Shane) Kallen, Class of 2003, was recently appointed Deputy Solicitor General of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this role, she focuses on matters before the United States Supreme Court, the Virginia Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and other courts in high profile matters implicating the Commonwealth of Virginia. Michelle is representing Virginia in a multi-state challenge to the Department of Homeland Security's family separation policy and in a multi-state challenge to the Department of Commerce's efforts to add a citizenship question to the census.
After Milken, Michelle attended Stanford University and graduated in 2007 with dual majors in Philosophy and Disability Studies, and honors from Stanford's Ethics in Society Honors Program. Michelle earned her J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School in 2010. Following law school, Michelle clerked for the Honorable Jane B. Stranch of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Michelle was a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in Washington, D.C. and a litigation associate in Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP's Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. offices. She drafted briefs before the United States Supreme Court, seven federal circuits, and numerous trial courts. Her work included a brief to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the National Women's Law Center supporting reproductive rights, a brief on behalf of technology companies in connection with the State of Hawaii's challenge to the travel ban, and successful representation of an asylum applicant from Jordan. While in Los Angeles, Michelle coached KIPP LA Prep's middle school mock trial team. Michelle currently serves on the board of the Women's Bar Association of DC, she is a director of Women Lawyers on Guard, and she holds a leader in the DC Bar's Law Practice Management community.
Michelle lives with her husband Michael, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and their four-year-old son Gabriel, who is an expert at filling his lunchbox with interesting bugs.
