Thaïs Miller '06 is a Creative Writing Maven

It is rare that someone turns their love of writing and literature into a career, but that is exactly what Thaïs Miller ‘06 did. She currently teaches Introduction to Creative Writing and Intermediate Fiction Writing at UC Santa Cruz and was recently one of two scholars accepted to UC Santa Cruz's Ph.D. in Literature program with a Creative/Critical Writing Concentration. Thaïs noted, “This is a unique program that combines a traditional comparative literature doctoral program with creative writing.”

Thaïs earned her Bachelor’s degree in Literature with a Music Performance minor from American University in 2009, and completed the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2010 while earning her Master’s degree in Creative Writing for Social Activism from New York University.

Currently, Thaïs’ academic research focuses on transnational postmodern Jewish fiction, film, and new media. She works mainly with texts in English, French, and Hebrew, all of which she studied at Milken. She is writing an article about the relationship between reverse tzimtzum and postmodern fiction, something Thaïs recalls discussing in Rabbi Gordon Bernat-Kunin’s Jewish Thought class. She has also been writing a series of academic articles about Netflix's GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

Thaïs recalled some her most influential teachers including Melody Mansfield, Roger Kassebaum, Jason Ablin, Ken Lasaine, Rabbi Neal Scheindlin, Corinne Weitzmann, and Lisette Valladares, whose personalized teaching styles allowed her to explore new topics. Over this past summer, Thaïs had a unique opportunity to combine her love of science and writing as an Interactive Writer and Content Strategist at Catalia Health, a healthcare robotics company, writing and organizing dialogue for the robot.

Thaïs remains connected to many of her former classmates from Milken in the Bay Area. She lives in San Francisco with her husband Chad, a structural engineer, and is a published writer many times over. Visit Thaïs’ blog to view her most recent works.
