Joey Freeman ‘09 Demonstrates the Value of Public Service

Joey graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in American studies and a minor in public policy. As a student at UC Berkeley, Joey was elected External Affairs Vice President, representing the student body to the local, state and federal levels of government, and served as Finance Officer of the University of California Student Association. While filling these important roles, Joey co-founded a statewide coalition called Fund the UC and launched a successful four-year campaign to pass citywide charter reform in Berkeley, creating the nation's first student-supermajority City Council district.

Joey recalls, “Milken always asked more of us, encouraged and pushed us to strive beyond what we thought ourselves capable of. Milken instilled in me a commitment to be a global citizen, to both take care of our own community and to not be blind to issues beyond the Jewish world. I've carried that with me every day working in public service.”

Joey is now the Policy Director on Gavin Newsom's campaign for Governor of California where he leads the development of the campaign platform and advises the candidate and his team on a wide variety of policy issues. Previously, Joey worked for Mr. Newsom in his capacity as Lieutenant Governor as his Southern California Chief Policy Consultant. In that role, Joey focused on education and workforce development, and staffed the Lieutenant Governor on the University of California Board of Regents and California State University Board of Trustees. Before joining the Newsom team, Joey served as the Political Director and Deputy Communications Director on a high-profile congressional campaign and completed the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs in Los Angeles.

Joey has remained active in the Jewish community and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Berkeley Hillel.
