Evening of Celebration Honors Creative Writing Students

The Creative Writing (CW) Program at Milken hosted the 14th annual Evening of Celebration on May 15. This year's CW leaders - Kayla Cohen '17, Shira Wilf '17, and Aaron Feldman '18 planned the evening and were recognized for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of the CW Program. Special recognition was also bestowed on Lexi Freund '17, the editor-in-chief of Milken's 2016-2017 lit mag, Serendipity. The audience was introduced to the incoming Creative Writing Leadership Team — Aaron Feldman '18, Hannah Kekst '18, Robert Carlson '19, Aaron Saliman '18, Slava Chemerinski '18, Emma Klein '19, and Sammy Frohlich '20, and were treated to readings of original poetry and fiction by the 2016-2017 leaders and Spotlight Poets.

Student readings ranged from a whimsical look at the self-reflective nature of narcissism, to an examination of the complex relationships between biology and technology.

Special guest alumnus, Ethan Stern '06, rounded out the evening with a glimpse into how creative writing led him into the world of comedy. He explained how his training in storytelling and finding specific details led him naturally down that path. As an Assistant to Talent Manager partner at 3 Arts Entertainment, he finds and nurtures comedic talent.

A highlight of the evening was when the CW leaders gifted Melody Mansfield, the director of creative writing, with a book of letters regarding how creative writing had impacted each of their lives. The book was filled with quotes such as, “Writing is my favorite thing on the planet," "Writing has become so much more than just meeting a word limit,” and “Writing has become about listening to myself and my surroundings, being the scribe to my mind's narrator." Mansfield noted she was deeply touched by each one.

Mansfield revealed how the celebration started, "Although the Evening of Celebration was originally conceived to be a gift to my Creative Writing students, it has come to be a gift from my students to everyone in the Milken community. It is a time to not only acknowledge the impressive accomplishments of our emerging student writers, but it is also a time to savor the uniqueness of each of their individual voices and visions, and to celebrate with them the satisfactions of creating an original product from their own determined efforts, talents, and dedication to the process of writing.”
