Boys Varsity Golf Team Clinches Second Straight League Championship

Congratulations to our Boys Varsity Golf Team, which has taken home the title of Liberty League Champions a second time. Guided by Coaches Dan Brink and Alison Howard Smith, the team overcame the loss of six senior players from the previous season and went on to become undefeated in league play. Coach Brink admitted they didn’t think they had a chance to repeat. He and Coach Smith, along with team captain Michael Schulman ’17 and reigning Most Valuable Player Jordan Brenner ’17, recruited players and helped the team members sharpen their golf games, keeping the squad competitive.

Coach Brink commented, “We were fortunate to have three returning players from last year’s championship team, and adding to our good fortune were three rookies who had not played golf before this year and were able to give us a good score every match.”

Brenner and Schulman, led the team, which never missed a beat. A talented group of underclassmen rounded out the roster. Freshmen Griffin Feldman and Matthew Levine, as well as a trio of hard working sophomores — Ryan Spivak, Ethan Permaul, and Kyle Newman, all played important roles in cementing the Wildcats’ 6-0 finish in the league for the second year in a row.

Coach Smith noted, “All of our seniors' work ethics played a huge part in maintaining the underclassmen's team spirit and commitment to practices and matches.”

The team will lose two seniors at the end of the spring season, but the coaches look forward to welcoming several new freshmen from the middle school golf team for next year’s season. Talented prospects from the middle school and PE golf class are sure to help bolster the team.

Feldman summed up the championship season by saying, “None of this could have been possible without the constant push for success from our coaches and the rest of the team.”
