Little Mermaid Jr. is Fun Under the Sea

The Middle School production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” takes audiences on a magical journey under the sea. Adapted from the Broadway production and animated film, the musical tells the story of Ariel (Shayna Schreiber '23), a mermaid with a beautiful voice who longs to live in the human world, against the wishes of her father, King Triton (Vivien Gordon '23). Ariel longingly sings about wanting more in the ballad “Part of your World.” After rescuing Prince Eric (Gavin Schutzer '24) when he falls overboard in a storm, she is instantly smitten. Determined to be with Prince Eric, Ariel makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula (Cayla Cohen '23), to trade her voice for legs. In order to stay a human, she must receive a kiss from Prince Eric in three days. If she does not, her soul will belong to Ursula.

Vibrant costumes and colorful set pieces adorn the production, creating a Technicolor spectacle. The show features popular tunes such as the Academy Award Winning “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl.” The colorful cast of characters also includes the wisecracking crab, Sebastian (Rose Bicas-Dolgen '23) —decked out in red top hat and tails— who is tasked by King Triton to keep Ariel safe, Flounder (Kate Behrman '23), Ariel’s bestie who is loyal to the end, and Scuttle (Eden Hirsch '23), a seagull who is Ariel’s expert on humans.

Director Rami Raff explained in the Directors Notes in the show’s program that he and collaborator Music Director Sarah Shapiro chose “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” as this year’s musical because they wanted to do a production that was a 180 degree turn from a high school setting like last year’s musical “13.” They wanted something “full of adventure and fantasy.”

With its universal message of finding a place to belong and overcoming obstacles to achieve your dreams, “The Little Mermaid Jr.” is a fun show for the young and old alike.

Two performances remain. Wednesday, January 30 and Thursday, January 31 at 7PM.
