Teacher Librarian

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Teacher Librarian is a full-time member of the upper school faculty, reporting to the Director of Library & Ed Tech Services. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment where value is placed on the skills and passions of each discipline within a larger context of school mission and integrative thinking. Primary responsibilities include: providing instruction in and access to information resources; collaborating with faculty to cultivate and support usage of the collection of library, information, and curriculum resources; serving as a student advisor; teaching or co-teaching two classes; and collaborating on school-wide programming as necessary and appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In collaboration with the Director of Library & Ed Tech Services, cultivate a collection that supports the school curriculum and reflects the values, mission, and Portrait of the Graduate of Milken Community School.
  • Support relevance of the middle and upper (6-12 grade) school curriculum by helping teachers to connect course content across academic domains and authentically explore the relationship between course content, the Milken Community School mission, and the Portrait of the Graduate.
  • Design and teach research and information literacy lessons that are well-sequenced in terms of content and developmental appropriateness and address contextual and critical research skills, finding and using resources, understanding the difference between primary and secondary documents, evaluating sources, media literacy.
  • Promote and demonstrate the use of new technologies and media to students and adults.
  • Utilize collaborative and individual learning opportunities that support student growth.
  • Develop learning experiences where inquiry, curiosity, and iteration are valued.
  • Create a learning environment where students feel safe and welcome.
  • Place a strong emphasis on learning and the important natural role mistakes play in learning.
  • Demonstrate situational adaptability that balances the needs of social teens, the needs of the lesson/research, and teachable moments.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Library & Ed Tech Services, collaborate to develop a curricular arc for information/media literacy that is aligned to the school's values and individual departmental needs.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Library & Ed Tech Services, maintain, promote, and provide access to the collection in the 6-8 grade Library Nook & the 9-12 grade Library.
  • Promote the ethical use of information, resources, and media among students and faculty.
  • Serve as a faculty advisor to a group of 10-12 students.
  • Teach two classes, which could be stand-alone courses or co-teaching of courses or units of study.
  • Collaborate on school-wide programming as necessary and appropriate.
  • Engage with students in the classroom, in the library, through office hours, extracurricular activities, clubs, and school-wide programming.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development in the fields of education, information literacy, research, and library science.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience at the high school level preferred.
 
Standard On-Campus Hours
Start: M - F by 7:45 AM
End: M - Th 3:30 PM, F 2:30 PM

SALARY RANGE: $60,000 - $120,000
