Middle School Teacher Librarian

The Middle School Teacher Librarian is a full-time member of the school faculty, reporting to the Middle School Principal. The Middle School Librarian spends half their time at the Middle School and half their time at the Upper School. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment where value is placed on the skills and passions of the disciplinarian within a larger context of school mission and integrative thinking.
Primary responsibilities include: co-teaching Middle School X-STREAM classes, serving as a Middle School student advisor, collaborating on school-wide programming as necessary and appropriate, and collaborating with the Upper School Librarian to cultivate and support usage of the collection of library, information, and curriculum resources.


Support the integration of X-Learning across the campus:
  • Design research and information literacy lessons that are well-sequenced in terms of content and developmental appropriateness.
  • Teach lessons connected to the X-Project in contextual and critical research skills, finding and using resources, understanding the difference between primary and secondary documents, evaluating sources, media literacy.
  • Create experiences where students have the opportunity to develop and practice interview and networking skills where inquiry, curiosity, and exploration are valued.
  • Working with individual students to move from selecting a research topic to creating.
  • Lead professional development experiences for teachers in the phases of X-Learning: Identification, Exploration, Purposeful Play and Connection.
  • Utilize collaborative and individual learning opportunities that support student growth.
  • Demonstrate situational adaptability that balances the needs of social teens, the needs of the lesson/research, and teachable moments.
  • Place a strong emphasis on learning, iteration, and the important natural role mistakes play in learning.
Expose students to literature options and create a culture of reading for pleasure by:
  • Creating reading centers (library nooks) in classrooms that align with departmental needs.
  • Create programs that connect students and faculty to outside an author-of-the-month program.
  • Invite authors to school to meet with or read to students.
  • Plan opportunities for Middle School Students to use the Upper School Library.
  • Create a learning environment where students feel safe and welcome.
  • Engage with students outside the classroom through office hours, extracurricular activities, clubs, and school-wide programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty to increase literacy awareness by:
  • Working with academic support department in refining and delivering instruction to students in Reading and Writing Workshop (literacy-based skill development program).
  • Support relevancy of the upper school curriculum by helping teachers to connect course content across academic domains and authentically explore the relationship between course content, the Milken Community Schools mission, and the Portrait of the Graduate.
Maintain knowledge in the field and best practices by:
  • Pursuing ongoing professional development in the fields of education, information literacy, research, and library science
