Milken's Camp X

Camp X is a space for budding designers, programmers, artists, and entrepreneurs ages 9-14 who want to explore and develop an innovator’s toolbox. 
Each weeklong workshop gives participants the opportunity to work with experts to learn the strategies the industry professionals use. Whether you are interested in building a robot, computer game, film or financial portfolio, Camp X is the right place for you.


 

Milken's Camp X

Milken's Camp X includes exciting programs for students interested in business, entrepreneurship, engineering, robotics, and cinematography.

Students have the option to participate just in the morning until 12:00PM or stay for an extended day which would give them the opportunity to further explore the incredible tools in our makerspace, or participate in our Sports program.

Morning session: 8:30 - 11:30 AM
Lunch: 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM (optional add-on for half day sessions)
Afternoon session: 12:00 - 3:00 PM
Full Day: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Workshops & Studios:

Workshops are “classes” with curricula and go deep into a subject over the course of the week. Studios are “open creative times” where student project ideas drive the creativity.

  • Gaming, Coding, and Digital Design

    In Gaming, Coding, and Digital Design, our campers will have the chance to get creative in numerous aspects of digital design, including Gaming, Virtual Reality, Coding, and 2D/3D Design.

    In Level 1, using Scratch and MakeyMakey, students learn and apply the principles of digital game design to create their own interactive game. There will be a variety of opportunities to explore virtual reality on both the HTC Vive and Oculus Go. Campers will do a number of fun 2D design projects, including printing and cutting their own custom stickers. Last, but not least, we’ll jump into 3D design and campers will create and print their own planters.

    In Level 2, using the programs Ready and Fusion, students learn and apply the principles of digital game design to create their own games. There will be a variety of opportunities to explore virtual reality on both the HTC Vive and Oculus Go. Campers will have a chance to do some fun 2D projects in Photoshop, including making their own Cinemagraph. Finally, campers delve into 3D design to create and print their own custom made 3D character.

  • Make it and Market

    In Make It & Market, our level 1 campers will have the opportunity to learn the basics of product design and fabrication. Spend a week at Milken’s Camp X and design, plan, iterate, and create the next great idea. This will include 2D/3D design, laser cutting, basic electronics/coding, and 3D printing in our Makerspace.

    Level 2 campers will go on to learn some of the fundamentals of finance and business models. Our program aims to create self-motivated entrepreneurs capable of identifying and solving the global challenges of tomorrow by using disruptive future technologies. Once students create their products, they’ll have an opportunity to design their business and branding, including a logo then pitch it to our “Shark Tank” judges.

  • Fashion Art and Design

    In Fashion, Art, and Design camp, campers engage in hands-on exploration of the art and design of fashion. They will learn and practice what goes into great design and will create their own artistic designs for clothing. Campers will make use of the fantastic tools of the Milken Middle School Makerspace, including our hobby machines, 3D printers, laser cutter.
    • Level 1 students will design their own t-shirts, tote bags, and buttons.
    • Level 2 students will design their own t-shirts and shoes.

  • Cinematography

    Why do movies have such power over us? Have you ever wanted to tell your own stories through filmmaking? This creative summer program will take campers through the process of creating their own stories and look at how and why our favorite movie moments stick with us.  We will work through each step of the filmmaking process from outline to pitch to screenwriting to storyboarding to composing your shots to editing and other elements of post-production. Why just see movies this summer when you can make your own?

  • Robotics

    In our Robotics Workshops, campers will be exposed to the mechanics and electronics of Robotics in a hands-on and exciting way.

    Level 1 campers will create interactive robots with Makey Makeys, Little Bits, Cubelets, and LEGOS.

    Level 2 campers will make use of the ample supplies of Milken’s three FTC Robotics teams to make their own remote control robot, and learn coding by programming their own drone.

  • Craft Studio

    Crafts All Ages (Grades 4-9)

    In our Crafts studio, you can make use of the ample supplies and tools that Milken Community School has to offer to create your own arts crafts. While the possibilities are endless, unlimited by your imagination, some of the possibilities you can make include: clothes, soap, candy, slime, jewelry, clay sculptures, drawings, crystals, buttons, and stickers.

  • Open Makerspace Studio

    Open Makerspace Studio: All Ages (Grades 4-9)

    Open MakerSpace Studio is a place where your inspired projects drive the action. Make use of the ample supplies and tools that the Milken Community School has to offer to create your own projects. Some of tools you can work with include: 3D printers, Laser Cutters, Hobby Machines, Electronics, Wood Working Tools, and Digital Music Production. Come bring your projects to life!

  • Sports

    Athletes will have the opportunity to play a wide range of sports and games. Each afternoon, students will have a chance to learn a new aspect of at least one sport, develop their skills in a specific area, and engage in some friendly competition(s). The goal of afternoon sports is to help campers stay active, learn more about how their body moves, and find activities that they are excited about continuing to participate in beyond the summer.

    All ages (grades 4-9).
