Students Honored at National Honor Society Induction

Congratulations to the 37 Milken students who were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). There were 21 seniors and 16 juniors honored in the induction ceremony held in the Middle School Community Room on Monday, November 12. Before current members, family, friends, and faculty, the students were recognized as outstanding scholars and leaders. They joined the 13 seniors that were inducted last year.

The event began with a reception that included a rousing performance by the Jazz Ensemble. NHS Milken Chapter Co-Presidents Emily Farshi ’19 and Eliya Makabeh ’19 welcomed everyone to the ceremony, followed by the NHS officers who explained the four pillars of the NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Highlights of the evening included a powerful address by English Teacher Jerry Martin on the role of integrity and civil discourse and a poetry reading by Alexandra Orbuch ’20. At the conclusion of the ceremony, each of the new members received an honor cord from Ingrid Guth, NHS Faculty Advisor, and Beau Lindsay, Assistant Principal Grades 11 & 12.

"I'm so proud of our NHS inductees,” said Lindsay. “As a cohort, they embody the values of scholarship, leadership, and service. In particular, I'm excited to see them mentor and work with our students and share the gift of their intellect. I know they will continue to give back to our community!"

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to honor outstanding high school students. It recognizes exceptional students that have demonstrated scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The Milken chapter participates in a peer tutoring program and a book drive. Makabeh, who has been in the NHS for two years and was last year’s tutoring coordinator, tutors students in a variety of grades and subjects. Being a tutor has been an inspirational experience for her. “The minute when a light bulb goes off in someone's head because they finally got a concept that you’ve been explaining to them is a feeling that is absolutely invaluable and incomparable,” explained Makabeh. “I love encouraging and empowering students through my tutoring.”
