"Songs from my Childhood" Concert - May 15

For the past few months, a group of Milken students have been engaged in a project called, "Songs from my Childhood.” In partnership with the nonprofit group, Facing History and Ourselves, these students interviewed Holocaust survivors to learn more about their favorite songs from childhood and find out why those tunes were meaningful to them. Based on these conversations, the students went on to select four songs that they would then record and eventually perform. Well, that performance has arrived, and the students' work will be showcased at an upcoming concert on May 15 in the Middle School Amphitheater.

The idea behind the project, which is led by Spiritual Practice Teacher Nachum Peterseil, was to create a musical conversation between Holocaust survivors and students of the 21st century by participating in a hands-on musical project that passes the music of one generation down to another. The endeavor is a direct result of a grant that Peterseil won through the Project Focus Learning Initiative.

As part of the project, Milken’s choir, “Kol Echad,” led by Mrs. Sarah Shapiro and the Concert Orchestra led by Dr. David Brown recorded four songs at the UCLA studios in March. CDs of this recording will be available for free at the concert.

“So far this project has been tremendously impactful to everyone who has been a part of it,” Peterseil shared. “Please join us to celebrate the survivors and the student work born out of this collaboration.”

The performance is free and open to the community. However, attendees are asked to register in advance for security purposes.
