Math Team Win Division at MathCounts Competition

The Middle School Math Team, The Math Hatters, scored a victory in their division at the recent South Bay Regionals MathCounts competition. Hosted by Northrup Grumman in El Segundo, on March 23-24, the tournament consisted of 45, 4-10 person teams. Milken sent a four-person team and six individual students. Team Captains, Zach Ducorsky ’22 (of the four-person team) and Ethan Hoffman ’22 (of the individuals) lead their teammates through four hours of grueling competition. The four-person team who captured the division title was comprised of Ducorsky, Brandon Friedrich ’22, Oliver Salvaterra ’22, and Ryan Boxer ’22. Other members of the team that competed as individuals included Camden Permaul ’22, Elliot Tabibian ’22, Levi Schmuel ’23, Chaz Frank ’22, and Deven Yacobi ’22. The Middle School MathCounts Club meets during lunch on Wednesdays. Students have the opportunity to challenge themselves with difficult math problems.

Congratulations to Hebrew Teacher Lidia Turner and Jewish Studies Teacher Sue Shachar whose article on their Middle School Curriculum, Innovative Nation, was published in HaYidion, the quarterly journal of Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools. Inspired by the book “Start-up Nation” by Dan Senor, the class explores Israel’s path to becoming a center of global innovation. Students tackle the real-life challenges Israel has faced and learn in a project-based environment incorporating research, simulations, field trips, artistic and culinary experiences, and consultations with experts.

Upper School Holds Lockdown Drill

The Upper School participated in a lockdown drill on Friday, March 2. Students, faculty, and staff were alerted over the loudspeaker to a lockdown, as there was an armed intruder on campus. The announcements included a description of the intruder and updates on his exact location throughout the drill. Everyone locked down their offices and rooms, as the intruder, played by Operations Supervisor Rafael Rios, wandered through campus pulling on doors trying to enter classrooms and offices. When the suspect was apprehended, uniformed officers cleared each classroom and office. Students and faculty were instructed to walk to the gym with their hands in the air. A 15 minute debrief was held afterward in the gym with Director of Operations and Campus Safety Nathan Humphreys, Director of Security Yona Lador, Rios, and Director of Marketing and Communications Stacy Jagodowski.

"Preparing our students and faculty on how to appropriately respond to an emergency is critical,” remarked Humphreys. “Rehearsing different scenarios such as a lockdown gives everyone a sense of confidence in order to move quickly and respond deliberately in the moment. The Upper School community did a fantastic job in responding during the lockdown exercise."

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is of the utmost importance. While this was only a drill, it highlighted the importance of having an emergency response plan in place.
