Boys Varsity Basketball Named Liberty League Co-Champions
Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Basketball Team for becoming Co-Champions of the Liberty League after a nail-biter 60-59 victory over Buckley on Thursday, February 8. Amitai Afenjar ’18 led the team scoring with 20 points, Aaron Harouni ’18 added 14, and Doron Matian’18 contributed 11. This is the 23rd year in a row the team has made the CIF Playoffs under Coach Mike Whiting’s direction. Playoff brackets will be announced on Sunday, February 11 at 1:00PM on the CIF website. The CIF Tournament begins on Wednesday, February 14.
“Our team did a great job,” said Coach Whiting. “We overcame a lot of hardships this season — injuries and sickness — but we really pulled it together at the end to become co-champions of the league. Hopefully we will make a deep run into the playoffs.”
The Wildcats finish the regular season with an overall record of 13-10 and league record of 6-2. A highlight from their season was reaching the semi-finals of the San Fernando Valley Invitational in December.
The team had a stellar season last year, clinching the Liberty League title, winning their first CIF Southern Section Division 4A Championshipand making it all the way into the state playoffs. Coach Whiting and two players were recognized with CIF honors. Afenjar was CIF SS Division 4A Player of the Year, Harouni was selected to the All-CIF SS Division 4A Boys Basketball First Team, and Coach Whiting was CIF SS Division 4A Coach of the Year. After winning the CIF Title, the team moved up from Division 4A to the more competitive Division 4AA this year.
