Junior Wins International Photo Competition for Jewish Teens

Congratulations to Aaron Yadegar ’19, whose photograph, “Ray of Light,” was selected as a winning entry in a competition for Jewish Teens. The Jewish Lens @ Beit Hatfutsot Photo Competition is an international juried event in partnership with renowned photographer Zion Ozeri, who is known for photographing the Jewish people and Jewish themes. The goals of the contest are to strengthen Jewish teens’ sense of belonging, commitment, and identification to the Jewish people — in Israel and worldwide, and create a dialogue between Jewish teens in Israel and worldwide.

Yadegar snapped the picture as part of the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) Witnessing History: Voices of the Holocaust — a program that connects students to Holocaust survivors and tells their stories through photography, short films, and PSAs — held at Milken last summer. As a Holocaust survivor, Betty, shared her experiences with students, Yadegar worked to capture her emotions during a happy moment in her story. He explained that is how he came up with the title “Ray of Light.” As for his thoughts on winning the competition, he said, “I’m proud that my photo was chosen as the winner and Betty is represented. I really wanted to express the hopefulness that she was feeling during that time.”

Students submitted their works along with an accompanying text that embodied the theme of “My connection to the Jewish people.” Yadegar wrote, “ One thing I learned from Betty, is that no matter what, if you have courage and strength in yourself, everything will turn out just fine.”
Yadegar has been involved with photography for six years, learning the finer points of the art in Milken photography classes. He is currently taking Advanced Photography with Bonnie Ebner.

The winning pictures will go on display beginning on February 7, celebrating Israel's 70th birthday, and will be displayed throughout May 2018 in a dedicated exhibit at Beit Hatfutsot, The Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv.
