Faculty Member Wins Grant for Holocaust Survivor Project

Congratulations to Spiritual Practice Teacher Nachum Peterseil for winning a $13,000 Project Focus Learning Initiative. The first year grant, sponsored by an anonymous donor who wanted to award grant money for schools to do a project based initiative related to the Holocaust, is administered by the nonprofit Facing History.

Peterseil has partnered with the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) for his project, called “Songs from my Childhood,” which will entail students interviewing Holocaust survivors to discover what their favorite songs from childhood were and why these melodies resonated with them. Students in the music department will record the songs in a studio, and the survivors will give introductions explaining the importance of the song to them. The studio sessions will be videotaped by students.

Inspired by his grandmother, Ester Peterseil, a Holocaust survivor and popular speaker, Peterseil wanted to see how music could be a bridge to tell a story through multiple generations.
“My grandmother is a huge inspiration for me,”revealed Peterseil. “She is the strongest person I have ever met. It is because of her that I am so passionate about the ‘Songs from my Childhood’ project.”
