Upper School Open House Big Success

For the past two weekends, the Milken campus has been buzzing with activity thanks to hundreds of prospective families attending record-breaking Open House events. The first of the two events was held at the Middle School, welcoming more than 300 people who came to check out the facilities, attend class sessions with faculty, and hear from students and administrators. This past Sunday, October 29, the Milken admission team was back at it, this time welcoming prospective students and families to the annual Upper School Open House, our largest one to date.

It was an exciting morning as prospective students and families got a glimpse into Milken and learned about our rigorous academic programs, student life and extracurricular activities, and experienced the warmth and spirit of our dynamic Milken community.

Festive blue and white balloons were sprinkled throughout campus, including big Milken M front and center at the top of the steps, greeting families as they approached the campus.

The talent of our students was showcased throughout campus, as well. Student artwork, photos of events and gatherings, and even videos of sports and arts were on display during the program fair. Tables were decked out with eye catching displays, lining the perimeter of the basketball court in Hollander Gymnasium. Families perused the wide variety of academic programs, departments, and extracurricular activities available at Milken. Faculty fielded questions from prospective students and parents and shared information on their programs. Throughout the day, families could even hear the musical stylings of our award-winning Kol Echad choir and were treated to some cool jazz from the Jazz ensemble.

Head of School Gary Weisserman welcomed parents and explained our school philosophy and mission, and shared Milken’s Portrait of a Graduate. Parents also heard from Principal Kimberly Schwartz, Director of College Counseling & Academic Planning Ross Mankuta, and Director of Admission for the Upper School Jessica Feivou. A panel with current students was held, where they answered parents’ questions and shared their first hand perspectives on Milken.

Both parents and students rotated through classes and observed our vibrant and passionate faculty in action. In the student rotation, students sat in on sample classes, such as English Teacher Amy Frangipane’s class, where they explored figurative language, learned the difference between a simile and metaphor, and examined the poem “The Hound.” In the next building, Sonny Ahad’s Physics class conducted cool demos to explain the concept of light and electromagnetic levitation. Student Ambassadors were on hand to greet guests, give directions to classrooms, and answer questions as families explored the campus. At the Guerin Family Institute for the Advanced Sciences, families had hands-on learning experiences and used the 3D printer, created stickers on the large format printer, and could try using laser cutter to cut engrave acrylic and wood in the MIT-inspired FAB Lab.

“The Upper School Open House was a tremendous success! We had our largest turnout ever, and families walked away with a better sense of our community, classes, programs, faculty, and students. Those in attendance represented a diverse mix of schools, interests, and backgrounds. I look forward to working with these families as they move through our application process. It will be a pleasure to welcome many of them into our 9th grade class next fall.
I am so proud of all the work that went into Open House and the incredible support of everyone at the Upper School,” remarked Jessica Feivou, director of admission for the Upper School.

Families who are interested in applying to Milken should inquire online here for information on the admission process. The application deadline for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, December 4.
