Winning Awards and Surpassing Goals with Team Milken

Senior Honored for Work with AIDS Project Los Angeles

On Sunday, a group of Milken students joined thousands of walkers for the 33rd annual AIDS Walk LA. Team Milken students gathered in downtown Los Angeles on the toasty autumn day for the 10k walk. A fundraising event, the walk raises money for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and other local HIV/AIDS service organizations. Thanks to the efforts of Team Milken, they surpassed their fundraising goal of $10,800 and raised more than $11,300.

Last week, Jared Hasen-Klein ’18 was honored by AIDS Walk Los Angeles for his dedication and commitment, receiving an elegant glass award on October 9. Hasen-Klein has walked, organized, and raised money for AIDS Walk Los Angeles since he was in middle school. He has been co-chair of the Milken AIDS Walk team since his freshman year.

“I got involved with AIDS Walk not because of any personal connection but for something to do when I was younger. However, through my years walking, I see the amazing work that APLA Health does. I see the people who they help and those who need help but are not getting it yet. AIDS is not talked about as much as many other epidemics but it should be. We are a voice for the voiceless," explained Hasen-Klein.

In his role as co-chair of the Milken team, Hasen-Klein wears many hats; running meetings, teaching students how to fundraise, soliciting prize donations from vendors,
and designing and selling T-shirts are just a few of his responsibilities. In addition to organizing the Milken Team, he volunteers several times a week at the Aids Walk office in Los Angeles. He was also named Star Walker of the week (a walker who has raised $1,000 or more).

The Milken Team is part of a coalition called Kids Who Care, and includes other Los Angeles High Schools. Kids Who Care has achieved the elite Gold Team status (one of the top 20 teams from the previous year’s walk) for several years. This is the 18th year a Milken team has participated in the walk.
