Milken Mini Articles: Junior Wins First Triathlon/College Counseling Junior Parent Night, and Middle School Back to School Night

Junior Wins First Triathlon

Competing in his first triathlon ever, Sasha Hakimi ’19 swam, ran, and biked his way to the top of the field in the 14-17-year-old division of the 31st annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon on Saturday, September 16. He joined more than 5,000 other athletes that participated in the event held at Zuma Beach, raising 1.4 million for children’s cancer research.

A member of the Milken Cross Country team for two years and the Milken Track Team for one year, Hakimi decided to compete in the triathlon to prove to himself that he could do it. To prepare for the 1.5K swim, 40K bike, and 10K run, he began training in early June. Hakimi’s first thought after completing the triathlon was, “When is the next one?” He loved the entire experience and admitted that he did not expect the race to go as well as it did. Although he was very tired, he managed to break his records in all three sports. "You never know what you are capable of doing until you do it,” remarked Hakimi.

College Counseling Junior Parent Night

The College Counseling Department held junior parent night on Tuesday, September 20. A kickoff to the college counseling process, the program included two guest speakers, Susan Levenson, from Kaplan Test Prep, who spoke about the testing process and Maria Furtado, the executive director of the non-profit, Colleges that Change Lives, who talked about parenting through the college search and application process. Following the presentations, the College Counseling and Academic Planning team led the program and covered topics including the college counseling timeline, the College Counseling office's testing plan philosophy, the benefits of college tours, building relationships with faculty, and continuing academic success and extracurricular involvement.

Middle School Back to School Night

During Middle School Back to School Night on September 18, Head of School Gary Weisserman took parents on a stroll down memory lane, remembering what life was like back when our Middle School students were born. A hashtag was simply called a number sign or a pound sign, YouTube didn’t exist and neither did Twitter, and Facebook was brand new and only open to college students. It was a different world back then, but today, Milken’s students experience an education that prepares them not only to succeed in today’s world, but in tomorrow’s.

To get a better idea of what this type of educational experience is like, parents had a chance to meet with their children’s teachers and advisors to learn more about what happens both in, and out, of the classroom. They also had the chance to see first-hand the personalities, energy, charisma, and professionalism of the people who interact with their children daily. A big success, the event received positive feedback from parents. A light dinner was included, giving both new and returning parents a chance to meet and mingle. The Upper School hosts their Back to School Night on September 27 beginning at 5:45pm.
