Milken Mini Stories: Writes of Passage, Town Meeting/Service Learning Fair, and Seventh Grade Parent Social

Writes of Passage

Robert Carlson ’19 was the spotlight storyteller at the Creative Writing Department’s first Writes of Passage event of the school year, held on Thursday, September 15. Carlson read his poem, “Spilled Tea on The Carpet, a Love Poem to Persia From the Perspective of an Iranian Refugee,” and an excerpt from his short story, “Mi Alma Llora Por Rodos—The Story of Tia Rikucha.” Drawing his inspiration from people from various cultures and communities whom he has met and the personal connections that he has made, Carlson’s writings were steeped in vivid images evoking many different sights and even smells. "Imagery comes easily to me. The hard part is transforming those images into art," he expressed.

Also reading their works were, Emma Klein ’19, Jordan Resin ’18, Raphael Eidelman ’19, Slava Chemerinski ’18, and  Noah Cohen ’18. Aaron Feldman ’18, CW Leader and 2016 recipient of the Norman E. Alexander Award for Excellence in Jewish Student Writing, introduced each writer.

Director of Creative Writing Melody Mansfield noted, “Writes of Passage is an opportunity for student writers to share their works-in-progress with other emerging writers. It is not a workshop or class, but is simply a supportive and welcoming forum for students to come together in the Milken writing community. Everyone is invited to bring their lunch and support their friends.”

Writes of Passage occurs each month, featuring one spotlight storyteller and additional writers who read their work. The next Writes of Passage will be on October 19.

Town Meeting and Service Learning Fair

The annual Service Learning Town Meeting was held on Friday, September 15. Isa Zweiback ’18 gave the senior sermon and urged students to give back and explained, “It doesn’t really matter why we give—the important thing is that we give. Whether it’s because your parents make you, because of a service learning requirement, or because you believe it’s a mitzvah, the end result should be to do good and give back to try to make the world a better place.”

At the service learning fair following the Town Meeting, there were many exciting service learning opportunities for students to choose from. Thirty organizations, nonprofits, and student run groups were in attendance, ranging from the SOVA Community Resource Program to Habitat for Humanity. Director of Service Learning Wendy Ordower remarked, “The service learning fair is about taking positive action and connecting to partners in the community.”

Seventh Grade Parent Social

On Thursday, September 14, more than 100 parents of seventh graders gathered together to celebrate the start of a new year. The event, held at the home of Head of School Gary Weisserman, is one of several parent socials held throughout the year, one for each grade level. Thanks to the time and effort of the MPA, Milken’s Parent Association, as well as Milken administrators, the event was a huge success and included quick welcome messages from members of the MPA as well as several administrators. Parents had a chance to mingle poolside while they enjoyed a delicious Poke bar, wide drink selection, and a number of sweet treats. To find out when your grade’s Parent Social will be held, visit either the calendar or the MPA tile on the myMilken Resource Board.
