Milken Wins 2017 Battle of the Schools Recycling Competition

The annual competition is administered by TreePeople and Generation Earth.
Comprised of 5 Districts and 46 Los Angeles area schools, the competition spurs schools to focus their waste diversion efforts away from landfills by promoting recycling, composting, and reuse. Milken won the battle for Supervisorial District 3.

During a two-week period, Milken's team diverted a whopping 21.38 pounds (per student) of plastic, metal, glass, paper, cardboard, compostable trays, food scraps, and landscaping waste.

Milken's waste diversion team features the Operations Department headed by Nathan Humphreys, along with Marco Ruiz and Jorge Tirado, and YOZMA's Environmental Club members headed by Polly Kim and David Kates, with students Abby Thurmond '18, Abby Zuckerman '17, Nicole Sussman '19, Grace Levine '18, Natalie Geiderman '19, Elijah Dardashty '20, Shira Wilf '17, Danielle Lewis '17, and others.

TreePeople and Generation Earth will present Milken students, faculty, and staff with certificates of achievement during the school's Earth Month celebration in April.

Director of Operations and Safety Nathan Humphreys notes, "Our goal is to have 100% student and faculty participation so we can reduce our campus landfill waste by 40% by the end of 2017."
