Milken Hosts Junior State of America Program

On Sunday, February 12, Milken hosted a Junior State of America (JSA) one-day program.
The debate conference was affiliated with the national Junior State of America organization – a political activism and debate organization for high school students.

Consisting of five debate blocks, the conference featured topics on Education, Healthcare, Immigration, the Environment, and Foreign Policy. Students had a choice of two debates or an activity to attend. The activities included thought talks, which were facilitated discussions on a topic without a defined pro and con, a political compass activity to help people find what side of the spectrum they are on, and an impromptu debate where the resolution is revealed at the beginning of the block. Approximately 50 students from area high schools attended the conference.

Milken students won 5 of the 12 "Best Speaker" awards that were handed out, with one Milken student winning 3 awards. Voted on by the audience after each debate, awards were given to the speaker who gave the best speech regardless of the side they were on.

Congratulations to all of the winners and to Saba Amid '17 and Laureen Akram '17 for their excellent leadership in making this event a huge success.
