Senior Earns All-CIF Honors

Candice Nourian ’19 was selected to the 2018-2019 All-CIF First Team Girls Basketball Team in Division 5A. Nourian capped off a stellar season collecting accolades, which also included making the  All-league team, as well as being named MVP of the Independence League. She has been the leading Milken Girls Varsity scorer for the last three years. This year she broke the team record for three-pointers in a game and for a season, for the third year in a row — draining 8 three-pointers in a single game and 66 total threes this season.

The Girls Varsity team won all of its league games, finishing at the top of their league with a 10-0 record. They were seeded fourth in their division in the playoffs. After sailing through the first two rounds, they fell in the quarterfinals.

Nourian’s success was a result of her relentless hard work and dedication. She pushed hard during practices and games to develop her ball-handling skills — learning to play aggressively on offense. As a senior, Nourian wanted to have a lasting impression on the basketball program and went into the season determined for the team do well and to go deep into the playoffs. Nourian, who is one of the team’s captains, attributes the team’s success to each player having different but special roles and says that every player was vital in the success.

Head Coach Barbara Iversen is excited that Nourian is being recognized for her efforts and praised her leadership and her three-point shooting skills. Explaining that Nourian’s leadership skills developed over her four years in the program, Coach Iversen said she led by example and motivated the other players to work hard. "Candice was a coach’s dream,” said Coach Iversen. “She worked hard, never gave up, and always gave her best. “It was evident how much she loved playing the game.”

Nourian says she will miss being part of the basketball team and will leave with fond memories. She noted the close bond she shares with her teammates and her coaches, Coach Iversen — her coach of four years — and Assistant Coach Danny Hizami —who coached her since middle school.

“Now that my time playing basketball is done, I realize how special the basketball program is,” said Nourian. “I really cherished the opportunity to be part of a loving team with so many wonderful individuals.”
