About the Guerin Institute

The Guerin Family Institute for Advanced Sciences is designed to be the “hub of innovation” for Milken Community Schools.  At its center, the state-of-the-art, Fab Lab-inspired space is designed to allow students to build and create almost anything they can imagine.  Already, students and teachers use the space for projects such as fully functioning robots, new kinds of musical instruments, enhanced prosthetic limbs, theater props, art and architecture projects, game design, fashion design, and more.  Our intent is to make the Guerin Institute even more accessible to our community, and central to the entire learning process here at Milken.

Position Overview

The Fab Lab Manager is a member of the Academic Leadership team and reports to the Upper School Principal. The Fab Lab Manager oversees curriculum, instruction, and programming centered around the Guerin Institute for Advanced Sciences and works to ensure that the vision and goals of this space are clearly articulated and align with the mission of the school and portrait of the graduate. The ideal candidate will collaborate with the faculty to ensure that they fully understand and utilize the potential of this space and how it can augment courses and curriculum, and enhance their students’ learning. Additionally, the Fab Lab Manager supports the variety of community programs that happen in Guerin, including Milken’s Robotics team, and supervises the Fab Lab Educator.
To that end, the Fab Lab Manager’s position includes responsibility in the following areas:
Leadership and Communication
  • Set and lead year-long institutional agenda
  • Plan and facilitate meetings that support and develop the faculty’s use of Guerin as a resource
  • Collaborate with the admission, communications, and marketing teams as necessary and appropriate to promote the accomplishments of the Guerin Institute and the school as a whole
  • Serve as a member of the academic leadership team, advocating for the needs of the Institute while supporting the wider mission, vision, and decisions of the school
  • Support the Institute’s internal and external communications, including learning management system, parent communications, and marketing

Community Support
  • Guide faculty’s development in their ease and ability to make use of the resources in Guerin through planned professional development opportunities and an “open-door” philosophy for interested faculty
  • Understand the School’s wider goals and mission and seek out ways to leverage the tools of Guerin to accomplish them
  • Support individual student projects and develop an approach to increase student understanding of the Guerin’s potential
  • Model best practices in innovative and collaborative use of the Institute
  • Pursue ongoing professional development in the fields of leadership, pedagogy, and technology.

Department Business and Administration
  • Prepare and administer an annual institute budget that reflects materials, curriculum, and professional development needs
  • Recruit and hire outstanding Institute faculty and volunteers, in collaboration with hiring manager and principal

  • Collaborate in the development of new integrated curriculum that reflects the school mission and portrait of the graduate
  • Work with department chairs to develop potential new arenas for Guerin integration into existing and future courses

Practical Considerations
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (master’s degree preferred) or other STEM-related field with significant technical experience
  • Experience with image editing, CAD/CAM applications, and design software
  • Experience with fabrication equipment such as a vinyl printer/cutter, laser etcher/cutter, CNC mill, CNC plasma cutter, and other
  • Experience working in or using manufacturing/industrial and rapid prototyping technology and equipment
  • Supervisory and teaching experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment; demonstrated flexibility, initiative, and collegiality
  • Has previous experience, and demonstrated success, in an academic or programmatic leadership role
