The Mitchell Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) was created in 2003 for the purpose of providing extraordinary science opportunities for students. A generous donation by the Edward D. and Anna Mitchell Family Foundation and the Kayla Mitchell Foundation made the Academy a reality.
This is a three-year program where students work in research laboratories in the United States and Israel. Sophomores begin the program by learning how to conduct independent science research, finding a mentor involved in their field of study, and working in professional laboratory environments. Juniors take their research a step further, working on their own hypotheses and projects with their professional mentors and fine-tuning their writing and presentation skills. The program culminates when senior students complete and submit their original science research to the Regeneron Science Talent Search. The Intel Talent Search is the top science award in the country for a high school student. Each year, MAST students participate in the American Society of Civil Engineers' Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition, hosted by the University of Southern California. This event brings together over 250 local high school students to participate in a full-day event that cultivates and celebrates the engineering profession. The Milken team collaborates on the design and construction of a model bridge made solely from wooden craft sticks and all-purpose white school glue to build the strongest bridge, one that will hold up to the largest applied load before failure. Our student teams consistently rank high, garnering awards and accolades in these competitions.
MAST students participate annually in the Shalhevet Freier International Physics Tournamentt, held at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel. Before the competition, teams from four continents built safes that may only be opened by applying the correct principles of physics. Winners are determined by a composite score of the number of safes each team was able to crack, the degree to which the team’s safe withstood cracking attempts, and the safe’s popularity among other teams.
The Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge is an annual multi-phase competition that challenges high school students from across the globe to use STEM, innovation, and entrepreneurship to develop technologies and solutions to real-world needs. Milken competes annually and has multiple award recipients among current students and alumni.
The Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is the world’s largest student rocket contest and a key piece of the aerospace and defense industry’s strategy to build a stronger U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Approximately 4,000 students from across the nation compete in TARC each year.
MAST students compete in the annual Raytheon Engineering Competition. Raytheon invites Los Angeles area high school teams to compete in an unannounced challenge to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Milken students have placed first or second in the competition in multiple years.
The National Science Bowl® (NSB) is a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of high school and middle school students who compete in a face-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. Milken students compete annually.
The Science Symposium serves as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of MAST students. Students in the science research program present their work to their parents, the faculty of Milken, board members, and local members of the scientific community. They explain their work, detailing both its importance and its significance in today’s scientific world. Additionally, select sophomores and juniors provide formal, in-depth presentations about what they have been working on, why, and with whom.
