Upper School Leadership

Roger Fuller - Principal, Upper School 

Roger_headshotDr. Roger Fuller was born and brought up in New England, spending many years teaching in Maine where he worked as a teacher, department chair and theatre director. When he made the journey to Milken in 1999, he knew that he had made his professional "Aliayah" and had found here a new community, new friends and a family of caring families. 

While he thoroughly enjoys the position of Principal of the Upper School, he also completely enjoys teaching Grade 9 English. After spending so many years in the Northeast, the advantages of living in Los Angeles continue to delight him. 

Francine Landau, Assistant Principal Grades 9-10 

Francine LandauAs a teenager, Francine Landau was a member of the UAHC's first national Mitzvah Corps Program, living and working in South Central, LA. She graduated from U.C. Irvine, Summa Cum Laude, then studied as a Maxwell Fellow at Syracuse University, earning a double master's degree in Social Sciences and American Studies. She went on to study social history at U.C. Berkeley, the settled in Israel in the 1970s where she worked for the Prime Minister's Office, on matters of security and defense. She lived during the '70s and '80s in a little house on Hod Hasharon. Ms. Landau worked at Santa Fe Preparatory School for seven years, teaching world history and journalism, handling public relations and their annual publication. She has written and published research articles, short stories, features and novels.

 Kimberly Schwartz, Assistant Principal Grades 11-12 

KschwartzIn addition to working as an Assistant Principal, Dr. Schwartz teaches two sections of English 9. Dr. Schwartz, brings to Milken a wealth of experience working in Jewish institutions, independent schools and private educational enterprise. Most recently, she work at Temple Judea in the San Fernando Valley where she served as Religious School Principal. Dr. Schwartz earned a B.A. from Stanford  University where she studied English and Jewish Studies. She earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from University of California, Los Angeles, where her dissertation research dealt with the training of independent school teachers to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities. She has been able to continue this teacher training work in local religious school setting in conjunction with the Bureau of Jewish Education. Outside of school, De. Schwartz enjoys reading, writing and spending time with her husband, Victor, and two children, Madelyn and Joseph.

Rabbi Gordon Bernat-Kunin - Rabbinic Director, Upper School 

gordon-headpicRabbi Gordon Bernat-Kunin is beginning his fifteenth year with the Milken Community High School. In addition to serving as Rabbinic Director, Director of the Advanced Jewish Studies Center, and spiritual leader for students, faculty, and staff in the Upper School, Rabbi Bernat-Kunin takes a guiding role in helping to define the vision and mission of Milken. 

Rabbi Bernat-Kunin graduated from Harvard with honors in Political Philosophy and has a Masters degree in Public Health from UCLA. He was the Founder and Educational Director of Makor, a Wexner Graduate Fellow, and has taught at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the University of Judaism and the Melamdim Program at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. He is currently working on his Ph.D dissertation in Religion and Social Ethics at USC and co-coordinates the Day School Vision Forum at the Hartman Institute. 

Rabbi Bernat-Kunin is married to Dina Bernat-Kunin and they have four children: Gavriella, Yonah, Avi, and Shai. 

Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer - Rabbi Grades 9-12, Upper School 

rabbishawnA native of Portland, Oregon Rabbi Fields-Meyer received her B.B in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. After studying Torah for two years at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem, she received a master's in Hebrew Letters from the University of Judaism in 1994, and was ordained in 1998 by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Rabbi Fields-Meyer enjoys active, participatory Torah study and appreciates the deep connection between our ancient tradition and our modern lives. She has taught over ten years at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, where she is Instructor in Bible. She is the co-author of the book, A Day Apart: Shabbat at Home, a practical and spiritual guide to the home rituals of Shabbat. Rabbi Fields-Meyer and her husband, Tom, a journalist, have three sons: Ami, Ezra and Noam.
