Congratulations to Julia and Lorenzo Cohen

Congratualtions to Conrad Award finalists, Julia Cohen (15) and Lorenzo Cohen (12), who recently won the “People's Choice” voting in the health and nutrition category of the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards held at NASA Ames in Mountain View, California. The Cohen team also received a $2500 award from a representative of Pepsico, the corporate sponsor of the health and nutrition category, to further their inspirational dream to create a series of studios to help autistic children improve their lives through ballet. Julia is doing research at USC and CARD (Center for Autism and Related Disorders) on the impact of ballet and the formation of mirror neurons in autistic children.The 2012 Innovation Summit was held March 29 – 31 at NASA Ames Research Center to host a forum for scientists, students, researchers and entrepreneurs, all sharing ideas, brainstorming solutions to global issues. This year, all enjoyed the chance to attend the Innovation Summit – virtually — through live footage of the Summit.

 Of the five teams from the Mitchell Academy of Science and Technology at Milken Community High School, three teams made it to the semi-finals in three distinct categories. Congratulations to all of the MAST students who represented Milken in this prestigious competition.

MAST Semi-Finalists

Five distinct teams entered project proposals for consideration in this year's Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards. Of these, three teams advanced in each of three categories of the competition: Aerospace, Alternate Energy, and Health and Nutrition. Congratulations to the MAST semi-finalist teams. Below is a short description of what each MAST semi-finalist team created, and a list of the students involved.




Team Name: Galactic Engineering
Category: Aerospace Exploration

Team Name: Dividing By Zero

Team Project: Capturing the energy from humans walking with piezoelectric devices in the heels of their shoes, then transferring it to the electrical grid.
