Advisory Mission
The Middle School’s advisory program provides support and direction for students’ academic, emotional, and social growth so that they become community leaders with sharp minds, generous hearts and kind souls. The program is a sophisticated, essential component of the curriculum and learning community at Milken. Middle School Advisory meets as a class period three days a week and provides shared time for students to reflect and address issues of community, identity, diversity, relationships, wellness and leadership. This exploration takes place through mentorship meetings with faculty advisors. These meetings are characterized by inquiry, experiential learning and peer support. Goals of empowerment and support extend directly to community awareness and action through service learning projects that include mentoring children in literacy through Koreh L.A. and partnering with elderly communities in and around Los Angeles.
"Advisory is the vehicle within the school for the mission of Milken. All research shows that when adolescents have a meaningful relationship with an adult and are part of a peer community support system, they achieve academically and are by far at lower risks for all kinds of health and wellness issues."
-Dr. Sarah Shulkind, Principal, David Saperstein Middle School
"Advisory is a safe haven where students are guided, unit by unit, to be able to identify different aspects of their own lives: their background, and their relationships with their families and friends."
-Lidia Turner, Advisor and Hebrew faculty
"For me, Middle School Advisory was a way for me to have a second family." -Zachary Brenner '14
"Advisory has helped me meet kids that I wouldn't have made friends with otherwise." -Leah Kuperman '16
"In advisory, I feel like I can share whatever I want without having to be afraid of what other people are going to think of me."
-Samantha Suman '15
