Social Action
Community Service at the Middle School is based on the Jewish principle of tikkun olam (repairing the world). Every Middle School student participates in the Koreh L.A. community service program. Once a month students travel to Sylvan Park Elementary School where they work as mentors to kindergarten and first grade students in a one-to-one partnership. Middle School students help their elementary school buddies improve their reading and oral language skills. The work at Koreh L.A. culminates at the May 10 Celebration of Books.
In addition to the Koreh L.A. community service program, Middle School students can also work to improve the world in the following ways:
Camp Milken
During the third week of school, the entire Middle School goes to Camp Milken at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute in Simi Valley. The focus of this two-day trip is building a strong, healthy middle school community. Much of the trip is spent in advisory groups so that advisors and advisees have a chance to become a cohesive group that knows and values every member in it. Jewish outdoor educators are also an integral part of the programming. Working with advisors, these outdoor educators tie the entire Camp Milken experience to Judaism and to our Middle School theme for the year. Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in hiking, high ropes, Israeli dance, archery, fire-making, and fox walking. During free time, students can swim, play soccer, tennis or football, and even brave the climbing wall. At Camp Milken, students and teachers alike build new relationships and solidify old friendships.
Grade 8 Trip to Washington DC
The 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia is an opportunity to our students to experience the richness and excitement of American history. Visits to the Capitol, meeting with a congressman, and touring the monuments that remember great figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt bring history alive. At Arlington National Cemetery students lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They commemorate soldiers who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam at the monuments that so touchingly recall their heroic struggles. They also visit the Smithsonian museums and the United States National Holocaust Memorial Museum. Each stop deepens their understanding of who they are as Americans and as Jews. Finally we arrive in Philadelphia, touring the National Constitution Center, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The trip is one that students talk about for years to come.
Grade 7 Trip to Catalina
Our trip to Catalina Island provides a unique opportunity for our students to experience first hand the flora, fauna and history of this unique island. The students will snorkel through the shallows of Emerald Cove, identifying the native sea life, kayak out to Bird Rock to study the inhabitants, and hike the many trails around the island to learn about the various ecosystems and the importance of conservation and preservation. These are but a few of the many inspiring learning opportunities the students experience during their four day adventure. This trip allows the students to practice the habits of a field scientists and apply the skills and knowledge they have learned in the classroom to the environment. All of the students' learning is documented in a journal that is graded upon their return to the main land of Los Angeles.
Israel Exchange Program
The Grade 8 Israel Exchange Program prepares student delegates from the Middle School for two exchange opportunities between Milken and Lady Davis High School in Tel Aviv. As Milken hosts the Israeli delegation during the fall, students from both communities learn about hospitality, friendship, and international relations. In the spring, Grade 8 Milken students travel to Israel to witness the wonder of Jewish history during the powerful days of Yom Hazikkaron (Remembrance Day) and Yom Ha’atzma-ut (Independence Day). During each of the two-week exchanges, delegates experience first-hand the culture and people of the hosting family.
