The Wise Individualized Senior Experience allows second-semester seniors to explore an area of interest through a hands-on research project which usually includes an internship in the community. Past projects have been as diverse as interning with a private investigator, with an anesthesiologist in an operating room, with an AIPAC lobbyist, or with a public relations representative for a large department store. Milken Community High School was the first independent school in the country to adopt the WISE program, and is currently part of a network of over eighty schools nationwide that participate in WISE.
WISE students are expected to dedicate at least five hours a week to their projects. During this time students work at their internship sites, engage in research and ethical reflection about their chosen fields, and collaborate closely with a mentor chosen from the Milken faculty or staff. A WISE project culminates in a twenty-five minute presentation evaluated by a panel of students, teachers, and community members. Many students who have participated in the program have found it to be the defining experience of their senior year.
